Getting to the event

Use postcode SA3 1JP. From the M4 (Junction 47), follow the A483 towards Swansea, then the A484 towards Llanelli. At the third roundabout turn left towards Gowerton. After passing under the railway bridge, turn right at the traffic lights onto the B4295 (North Gower road) and follow it through Penclawdd, Crofty and Llanrhidian to Llangennith.

From Swansea, take the A4118 towards Upper Killay and Gower, turn right onto the B4271 at Upper Killay, continue to Llanrhidian, then follow signs for Llangennith.

In Llangennith, pass the church and the King's Head to a mini-roundabout, then go straight on into Burrows Lane. The caravan park and event parking are about 1 mile along, at the end of the lane. The lane is narrow, so please take care, especially after dark. Event signs will be in place from the mini roundabout. 

The event is not accessible by public transport.

Car Parking

Most parking will be on hard standing in the caravan park car park. Space is very restricted, so please car share as much as possible. If needed, there will be extra parking in fields a short walk from the Arena.

The last part of the route is along a narrow lane, so please arrive in plenty of time to get down the lane and be parked. There will be no exits from the car park until 20:00.

Please drive slowly through the Arena. Competitors will be walking to and from the Start and Finish in the dark.

Arena

The Arena is within 100m of all parking. A marquee will house Enquiries, Download, Results, bag drop, First Aid and the prize giving.

Kit check. There will be a SIAC battery test and a kit check as you leave the Arena. Please make sure you have your SI card, compass, head torch, spare light, whistle and full leg cover (and a cagoule, if it has been made compulsory). You will not be allowed to start without the compulsory kit. Signs in the Arena will tell you if any extra kit is required, and this will also be checked.

2026 trophies. All trophies from the 2026 British Night Orienteering Championships must be returned to Enquiries. If you hold one and are not coming, please pass it to someone who is, or contact the Organiser to arrange for it to reach the event.

Enquiries will be open from 17:30 to 20:00 in the Arena for returning trophies, collecting hired SI cards, complaint and protest forms, and leaving car keys while you run.

First Aid will be in the marquee.

Toilets will be adjacent to the Car Park.

Terrain and course notes

A complex coastal sand dune system in the north-west corner of Gower, within the Gower National Landscape (AONB). There is a mix of open grassy dunes and more thickly vegetated dunes. The dunes are higher and more pronounced in the north, and become vaguer and less distinct towards the south.

There are areas of thorny scrub but no bracken. The area is well used by walkers, so there are many small paths, and not all of them are mapped. Going is slower towards the coast.

After a wet winter, some depressions may be waterlogged. Sheep graze the area and may be present on the night.

Map Details

Surveyed to ISOM 2017-2 by Ben Mitchell in 2026, using LiDAR.

  • Scale: Course 1 & 2 are 1:10,000 and courses 3 to 8 are 1:7,500
  • Contours: 5m
  • Size: A4
  • Printed on waterproof paper; maps will not be bagged.
  • Control descriptions are printed on the map, with loose copies in the start lanes.
  • Double-sided maps: the longer courses will have a double-sided map (map turnover). Which courses [TBC].

Map Notes

  • Scrub and thorny bushes are mapped as vegetation: fight (ISOM 410).
  • Knolls are mapped where they are distinct and at least 1m high, and depressions where they are at least 1m deep.
  • Low fences cross the area and are ruined in places. Some have barbed wire on top. Only standing fence is mapped, so a gap on the ground is a gap on the map. All fences are crossable. Stiles and gates are marked, and courses are planned to allow use of them.

Controls and Punching

SPORTident will be used on all courses, with contactless (SIAC) punching enabled.

  • SIAC cards will punch contactlessly. If your SIAC doesn't flash at a control, insert it into the unit as normal.
  • All other SI cards work as normal by inserting them into the control unit.
  • SI card hire is available when you enter on pre-entries. Hired cards can be collected from Enquiries.

Key medical information

When you enter, please let us know about any specific requirements, medical or otherwise, and we will do our best to help. The entry form asks for any medical information officials should know if you are overdue, injured or unwell on the course. It is only seen by the Organisers, Safety Officer and First Aid, and is deleted after the event.

Key safety notes

  • Head torch and a spare light are compulsory.
  • Whistle is compulsory.
  • Full leg cover is compulsory.
  • A cagoule with a hood, or a hat, may also be made compulsory. We will confirm this nearer the time.
  • Safety bearing: if you are lost, head east until you reach the road or the caravan site.
  • Out of bounds: [areas TBC]

In very poor weather we may add further safety measures, which could include:

  • carrying waterproof over-trousers, a hat and gloves
  • a recommendation to carry a mobile phone

All compulsory measures are required to be complied with for the duration of the course. If severe weather makes it unsafe to go ahead and we have to cancel the event, we will tell entrants as soon as possible by email and social media. In this case the Refund Policy above will apply.

Complaints, Protests and Appeals

Complaints about a course should be made no more than 15 minutes after the result that is the subject of the complaint has been published. Complaints and protests should be made using this link or QR code to a WhatsApp form: [link and QR code TBC]

If you are unhappy with the response to a complaint, you may make a protest within 15 minutes of receiving the response. Protests are considered by the Event Jury, whose decision is final.

This event could not have taken place without the support of the Broughton Burrows Caravan Park, whose land we used for parking and the arena and for allowing access to the sand dunes themselves.

We are very grateful to our members who volunteered to help with this event. It is a huge undertaking for a small club and we could not do it without them. Our club will be 55 years old in 2027 and hosting the 2027 British Night Orienteering Championships provides a great way to celebrate this achievement.

Entries are handled through pre-entries.com. We only use your details to run the event: start lists, results, contacting you about the event, and passing what's needed to British Orienteering for rankings. Results with names, clubs and times will be published online. Photos may be taken at the event; tell an official if you'd rather not be photographed.
